ANZ warns customers of scam emails
ANZ Bank in Papua New Guinea (PNG) is warning all its valued clients against scam emails that attempt to phish (fish) a client’s banking details.
Phishing, according to Wikipedia, is the:
…act of attempting to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, and credit card details (and sometimes, indirectly, money) by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication. Communications purporting to be from popular social web sites, auction sites, banks, online payment processors or IT administrators are commonly used to lure unsuspecting public.
The bank, in a public statement that has been running in the local dailies for a few weeks now, warned that these scam emails will inform customers of irregularities with their online banking, and offer an attachment to update their details.
Customers have been advised that ANZ will never ask for their password details and to delete any such email immediately.
ANZ is not the only bank to warn against such malicious emails, Westpac came out earlier warning customers of the same threats.
