PNG NICTA announces Girls in ICT Essay Competition
Papua New Guinea’s National Information and Communications Technology Authority (NICTA) is showing its support and encouragement for girls and women in the information technology industry with a national essay competition.
In 2012, the essay’s theme was “Girls Can Do ICT”, this year’s theme is “How Can We Expand ICT Horizons (Opportunities) for Girls and What Attitudes Do We Need to Change to Provide these Opportunities.”
NICTA, in a public announcement stated that, research indicates that girls and women choose careers where they can make a difference like healthcare, education and medicine. However, they opt out ICT and it is therefore a challenge for the global ICT industry to change this trend and get more females into ICT.
The ICT regulatory body further stated that “some work has been done in PNG to empower and educate more girls but the challenge remains to create more opportunities that will attract more girls into ICT.”
The competition is open to all female students in grades 10, 11 and 12 only. However, dependents of NICTA employees are not eligible.
The competition started on March 26 and will end on April 15. Entries received after the closing date will not be considered and winners will be announced on NICTA’s website on April 25, commemorating Girls in ICT Day.
The essay must a minimum of 1000 words and, if typed, must be in New Times Roman font, size 12 with justified paragraphs. If it is handwritten then it must be neat and should not be more than four pages.
All essays should contain a cover page stating the issue discussed as well as the writers details including name, grade, school, province and contact number.
Entries can either be emailed to essaycomp@nicta.gov.pg or mailed to:

There will be five categories for prizes; one for each region and an overall for the best essay.
