Digicel PNG to Launch New TV Service on Saturday
After months of speculation, Digicel’s latest venture into the television industry is set to bear fruition this month.
The telecommunication’s giant will officially launch their new TV service this Saturday (November 15, 2014), and it will use Digicel Play as its platform and offer 29 channels. However, users will need a Digicel Play set-top-box to access the service.
The service will be like Hitron’s TV service with the exception that recharge can be done using Digicel’s mobile top up service, and packages will range from 1 to 30 days.
According to PNG Loop, the different packages available will be:
- 30 Day Premium Package – 29 channels;
- 30 Day Standard Package – 18 channels;
- 7 Day Package – 8 channels;
- 3 Day Package – 7 channels, and;
- 1 Day Package – 6 channels.
While specific channels have not been identified, Digicel has announced TVWAN channel which will be free-to-view and will have local and international news, children’s programs like Bananas in Pyjamas and ZooMoo, and SP Hunter games in the Queensland Cup plus classic and blockbuster movies.
As an introductory service, the first two months will be free, and fees will apply after.
According to Digicel’s media campaign, the service can be accessed anywhere in a major town or city with a set-top-box and an existing antennae. In remote areas, a satellite dish may be required.
Digicel will be retailing indoor antennas between K30 – K80 and outdoors for K45 (price may change later). However, the company will be using specialist installation partners so putting up antennas may attract a fee.
Meanwhile, the private launching of Digicel Play was held last night at the Laguna Hotel poolside with entertainment from various local artists.

Who do I contact to subscribe? I don’t live in PNG, but another pacific island. I can receive the channels when they broadcast free.
Hi Mike, you can contact Digicel to subscribe. The signal is at the moment available to Port Moresby and Lae residents only. I believe you can receive the signal via satellite. However, you have to check with local authorities if this is allowed.
Please call (+675) 180 1515 for further details or you can message them on Facebook (www.facebook.com/digicelpng).
Hi Mike, which Island do you come from?
Hi Digicel Team, please advice when the TV services can be extended to Kokopo,ENB?
Please advise what a scramble channel is?
Hi Krystal,
A scrambled channel typically refers to a TV signal or channel that has been encrypted by the broadcaster and cannot be viewed with standard TV equipment. Viewers usually pay for the channel to be opened.
TV service providers like Hitron use set-top-boxes (STB /decoder) and a sort of prepaid card to decrypt the signal while Digicel uses the firmware (software) on the STB to do this.
Thanks for the response, in other words I have to pay for the plan to view this channels?
