Digicel PNG branching into the television industry
Update 06 August, 2014: DigiTV will be launched in mid November.
Papua New Guinea’s (PNG) largest mobile communication’s provider, Digicel PNG, is expanding into the television industry, and may go live next month (July).
In a full page advertisement in the local papers, the company announced vacancies with the new digital television service. However, it is unclear if their service will be free-to-air or a prepaid cable service like Hitron.
The service is also available to Tongans and was launched in 2009. According to Pacific Islands Report the service was launched on July 30 and is a prepaid 20 channel service with two packages; DigiMax and DigiFamily.
If Digicel PNG follows the Tongan format then we can expect the same number of channels which should include DigiEntertainment, DigiSports and DigiMovies among the list.
The service was first mentioned by NICTA CEO, Charles Punaha, at the launching of the PNG ICT Cluster at Gateway early this year. However, Punaha kept a lid on which exact service provider it would be.
The list of vacancies with the new digital television service can be found on the PNG Loop classified page.
