Booting into safe mode with an ASUS P5KPL-AM/PS motherboard can be tricky.
I recently had to go through an hour of trying and experimenting until I found this solution.
To boot up in safe mode, press the F8 button. The first time you do this the boot menu will show.
You then select to boot from your HDD and as soon as you press enter, hit the F8 key again.
The windows boot option will show and now you can select safe mode.
