Simple Ways to Maintain PC’s Performance
Most personal computer (PC) users will realize that their machine’s performance and speed starts to degrade with time. This is due to several reasons; however, proper and continuous maintenance of the system will help arrest this problem. You can bring your machine to a computer shop but this is going to cost extra when you can do it yourself.
Clean the registry
One of the main reasons for a decreased performance is registry bloating. This problem is easily solved by using registry cleaners. You can download one from the internet and use it to clean the registry.
Install only one antivirus program
Most people think that installing more than one antivirus program on the computer ensures that they are protected. This is however, a misconception. The truth is having one regularly updated antivirus program installed in your computer provides more security that ten outdated AVs.
With some many AVs installed in one machine, the programs will start to hog the memory, processor and storage space causing a decrease in performance.
Run Disc Cleanup
Disc cleanup is a simple utility in Windows that allows you to safely delete unnecessary files and free up space. You can run this utility by:
- Clicking Start, then Run and type cleanmgr, then click OK.
- Clicking Start, then All Programs, then Accessories, then to System Tools, and then click Disk Cleanup.
- Open My Computer, right-click on the disc you want to clean, click Properties, click the General tab, and then click Disk Cleanup
Defragment your drive
There is another utility in Windows called Disk Defragmenter that increase access speed by rearranging files store on the hard drive to occupy the closest space. This optimizes the read and write times and also increases system start up time.
Remove unwanted start-up programs
Another method to improve system performance is to stop unwanted start-up programs. To do this you click Start, then Run, then type msconfig. Choose the start-up tab and uncheck programs you don’t want to run on start-up.
Disable unnecessary services
Delete large file types (videos & pictures)
Videos and pictures take up a large amount of space. If you want to keep them then storing them on an external drive or CD/DVD is the way to go.
