How to connect your Huawei E586 MiFi to BeMobile internet
I just became the proud owner of a Huawei E586 MiFi (mobile Wi-Fi) modem from Fone Haus for K199. I initially had a Huawei E5832S but I bricked that trying to update the firmware.
If you buy the modem from them, they will ask if you want it configured and activated. Now, if you are like me and want to do it on your own, then I’ve written this guide just for you.
The device from Fone Haus is basically an open line so you can use either a BeMobile or Digicel SIM. In this example, I’ll be showing you how to configure and connect using the first.
Obviously, the first thing you need is a BeMobile SIM card. This can be bought for K5 at the BeMobile shop at Waigani (opposite BSP). Then you need to unpack your modem, insert the SIM and battery, switch it on and we are ready to rock.
Oops! I nearly forgot, when you open the device, make sure to record the SSID and the Wi-Fi key. You will need this to connect to the device later.
Now, I’m assuming your device is already prepped and switched on so you need to connect your computer to the modem. Turn on your wireless network card (if you have one) and search for the SSID; which you should have recorded somewhere. Select it and then enter your Wi-Fi key.
If you don’t have a wireless card, then connect the USB cable and install the drivers on the device. You will not need the Wi-Fi key if you are doing this.
Once a connection has been established, open your browser (i.e., Firefox, Chrome, IE etc.) and type http://192.168.1.1 in the address bar. Then press enter. This will open your dashboard.
You can click on the MobileWiFi shortcut if you installed the driver.
In the dashboard, the default username will be admin – type “admin” in password and click on login. This should take you to the connection page.
Please also note that the same task can be accomplished by going to the settings page and clicking Quick Setup.
Now in the connection page, click on Profile Management and should directed to its page. This gives you the option of adding your own profile.
A profile box will appear. Enter a profile name; it can be anything you want to add. I typed “BeMobile (WEB)” in mine. Then go over to APN and select the Static radio button and type “internet” in the box and save. Do not change anything else.
Being the only profile in the device, it should be selected by default. And you need to make sure the SIM is activated and your account has credits.
Now to make things a bit more interesting, I will show you how to customize your Wi-Fi key to something you can easily remember next week.
NOTE: If you want to use a DigicelPNG SIM then follow the same procedure but enter “internet.digicelpng.com” for APN.
