The Great Ninigo Islands Canoe Race
Papua New Guinea (PNG) has some of the world’s best seafarers, and these skills were learnt not as a profession but for survival. However, as the world changed, the need for seafaring skills became less relevant, especially with the introduction of the outboard motor and dinghy. But that skill set is now being encouraged in the Ninigo Group of Islands in Manus Province through events like the Great Ninigo Islands Canoe Race.

The race is an annual event held for a week every August and features the people of the Ninigo Islands showcasing their seafaring skills in their traditional canoes. There are also displays of the food, artifacts and the local culture.

This year the preliminary races will be held from 19 – 22 of August with the finals held on 23 – 24 August and the awarding and closing ceremony on the 26th of August.
