Defamation Case Against Blogger Dismissed

Blogger Martyn Namorong
The defamation case against Papua New Guinean blogger Martyn Namorong has been dismissed by a National Court judge Ere Kariko after the plaintiff’s lawyer failed to comply with directions issued by the court, Loop PNG revealed.
The plaintiff, PNG Electoral Commissioner Patilias Gamato, last year took a restraining order and filed a case against Namorong for allegedly labeling the former as a tomato on social media. However, the case has been dismissed today after the plaintiff, through his lawyer, failed to produce affidavits supporting his case.
The case went to court this morning for further directions but the plaintiff’s failure to comply with the orders, a year on, suggested a ‘lack of genuine interest’ in pursuing the matter further.
Justice Kariko exercised his discretion to dismiss the case after no formal application or affidavit was filed to explain the non-compliance.
