Ginigoada Foundation to Train Women Bus Drivers
Women drivers will be undergoing a series of driver training starting next month until July next year in a program that looks at encouraging more women drivers in the country.
The training under the Ginigoada Foundation will certify the women to find jobs as certified drivers for big buses in other companies and also give them the opportunity to run their own transport services.
“We hope that some of these women will go on to work with large companies feel confident to drive large trucks and vehicles around this nation and go into their own business,”
– Ginigoada Foundation manager, Pastor Mike Field at the recent launching of the training.
Six women from the first batch will undergo a month’s training of theory and practical which will take place along the 9 Mile to Gerehu road.
“Once they are confident they should try the busy city routes…majority of these ladies are class one but few are class six,”
– Ginigoada Foundation training manager Robert Evah.
Sponsored by the government of Canada, the program identifies that teaching the 48 women to drive will enable them to earn an income to support their families, reduce road accidents and breaks barriers of inequality.
“We saw that there is a need in the country to empower women and we believe that for these women there will be a sense of pride and they will also encourage other women to drive big buses or be successful in other male dominated field,”
– Robert Evah.
The training follows the recent launching and operation of the Meri Seif buses along with a total of six women drivers currently driving big buses within the city.
Pastor Mike Field has thanked the National Capital District Commission (NCDC), the Canadian government and UN Women for their support over the years.
“The main thing is that we want to promote is opportunity we believe that people to have the ability to learn and do new things but what is lacking is opportunity.”
He is encouraging more women to apply for the driver training.
“We want more women to say yes I can do these and take away some of the perceived restrictions that says you’re not good enough.”
