Telikom PNG to reduce data rates in April
Telikom PNG will reduce wholesale data rates for internet from 9t per megabyte (MB) to 3t per MB.
This was announced by Telikom chief executive officer (CEO), Charles Litau, on March 27.
The price change will take effect in April and depending on demand, speeds may be increased to 1.6 gigabytes (GB) per second or higher.
Telikom PNG board had made the decision in February 2012 and was part of the telecommunications company’s plan to make internet more affordable and accessible to the public.
The data rate plan is offered to internet service providers (ISPs) and ranges from a minimum of 5 MB per second to 155 MB per second. However, Telikom PNG chairman, Manesh Patel, said the “reduction on internet will not have an impact until it’s rolled out and ISPs come on board.”
The announcement comes after media coverage and international criticism on the high cost of internet in the Papua New Guinea.
