Teachers sacked for helping students cheat in national exams
9 teachers have been given the sack by Western Highlands provincial education officials after investigations revealed that they helped students cheat in the 2019 Grade 10 National Examinations at a school outside of Mt Hagen.
According to The National, the Western Highlands provincial education board chairman Lawrence Pena and Teaching Services Commission (TSC) advisor for the highlands region Basil Murian announced that disciplinary action have been taken on 12 teachers including a headmaster.
They revealed that the headmaster and 2 others were found to have committed lesser offenses and disciplined by removal of their salary increments. Meanwhile, the deputy headmaster and 8 teachers were dismissed.
The investigation conducted in 2020 revealed that the cheating was coordinated, with teachers providing answers to students while supervising the examinations.
Mr Murian also revealed that the matter had to be dealt with administratively as there is no criminal legislation on teachers assisting students to cheat.
Meanwhile, another 3 teachers were dismissed from the same school after it was discovered that they did not have the proper teaching certificates.
