Female nursing students attacked during polio vaccination
Two female students from the Lae School of nursing were raped by men during the second round of the mass Polio Vaccination Exercise in the Tewai-Siassi District of Morobe Province.
NBC National News was reliably told that the students were doing their practical at Etep Health Center in Wasu Local Level Government Area when they became victims of rape.
The two victims were airlifted to Lae this afternoon by Manalos Aviation Medivac team.
The Lae School of Nursing administration did not reveal much but confirmed that the victims are two female students assigned to Etep Health Center in Wasu Local Level Government Area.
It is believed that the final-year-students, during their practical stint at the Health Center, assisted in the Polio Vaccination Exercise into the villages in the Wasu area.
During the OPV exercise into Mulayakawa Village in Sio outside wasu station, they were raped after being taken by some men, believed to be locals.
The Morobe Provincial Police commander could not be reached for comments but it is understood that police personals were already being deployed to the crime area.
This attack on the two students has affected the rest of the student body and administration of Lae School of Nursing.
Meanwhile Tewai Siassi MP Dr Kobbie Bomoreo, whose wife is a staff at the nursing school and who resides in the campus, has condemned the attack.
Dr. Bomoreo who traveled to Port Moresby this Morning for Parliament would return tomorrow to address the issue.
