Court restraints PNG blogger
A celebrated Papua New Guinean (PNG) social commenter is facing legal restraint for outing his frustration with the country’s Electoral Commissioner (EC) on social media.
According to PNG Attitude, a court order was granted by Justice Collin Mikail to EC Patilias Gamato against writer, blogger and social justice advocate Martyn Namorong to ban what they have termed as ‘defamatory remarks’.
Allegedly, the case arises from Namorong calling Gamato a fruit – tomato. However, the blogger was not present as court officials could not located him.
Namorong has also protested the ban by posting a picture of himself being gagged and blindfolded.
Dear all
Since I have been restrained by the courts I will be tweeting this image daily until such time I am allowed to tweet freely #DAY1 pic.twitter.com/aVh8rCI5hZ— MARTYN NAMORONG (@MartynNamorong) July 12, 2017
PNG Attitude has also launched a public appeal to establish a fund should the matter be pursued in the Courts.
Martyn – Should threatened action eventuate (and very few do), @PNGAttitude will call upon readers to fund a defence #freedom #justice #png https://t.co/IdT2X7nVgK
