Graduate Certificate in Counseling (and Certificate IV in Training and Assessment)
Australia Awards – PNG is seeking suitable applicants who are currently providing counseling services for a Graduate Certificate in Counseling course in Australia. The Graduate Certificate will be delivered alongside a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment course so that graduates may share their newly acquired knowledge and skills with others in their organization.
The course is targeting employees from the Department of Health, Community Development and Religion, Education and Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology, the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary, Provincial Administrations (e.g, Child Protection Officers), Hospitals, Family Support Centers and NGO and Church-based organizations involved in providing counseling.
Applications are also sought from teaching staff from the university sector so that graduates may contribute to the development and delivery of future counseling programs and curricula.
All applicants from the Government of Papua New Guinea (GoPNG) must complete the Australia Awards – PNG Fellowships application form for GoPNG and have endorsement of the head of their department, agency or administration. Please note, Australia Awards will facilitate the endorsement from the Department of Personnel Management (DPM).
Learning Objectives
Upon completion, the graduates will be able to:
Graduate Certificate in Counseling –
- Apply knowledge of different counseling theories and communication skills to a range of counseling issues and clients.
- Demonstrate an understanding of case management processes and skills in working with children, youth and families.
- Explain and demonstrate the importance of maintaining an effective working alliance in the counseling processes.
- Identify and describe key ethical and professional issues relevant to counseling individuals, couples and families in a cross-cultural context.
Certificate IV in Training and Assessment –
- Plan, design, organize and deliver group based learning.
- Use training packages and accredited courses to meet client needs.
- Address adult language, literacy and numeracy skills.
- Plan, design and develop assessment activities, tools and processes to assess competence.
To be successful for this Fellowship, you must:
- Have a minimum academic English proficiency level equivalent of IELTS 6.5 /TOEFL 575 (shortlisted applicants will be required to undertake a test facilitated by Australia Awards).
- Applicants must be directly involved in Counseling /and or teaching counseling or a related field (such as psychology or social works).
- Be currently working with one of the organizations listed above and have your application supported by your manager.
- Have a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent and /or a minimum of five (5) years work experience in a counseling case management or social work related area.
- Have a commitment to prepare and implement a project as part of the course requirement; engage actively and foster networks with multiple stakeholders, including in Australia and to disseminate learning from the course with students, colleagues and peers.
Course Delivery
Two or three ‘blocks of study’ each up to six weeks in Australia with pre- and post-course one week workshops in PNG (dates, location and total length of study to be confirmed).
This is a fully funded scholarship. All course fees, travel, accommodation and per diems will be provided by Australia Awards – PNG.
