ICT players urged to ensure access to rural PNG by 2020
Players in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector have been called on to ensure internet access is available to rural PNG by 2020.
Deputy Secretary for Policy with the Department of Communication and Information, Koreken Levi, made the comments today.
This follows his return from the 10th Asia Pacific Economic Corporation (APEC) Telecommunication and Information Ministers meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Levi said, doing business in PNG is costly when it comes to using ICT, especially accessing the internet.
With the upcoming international events to be hosted in PNG, and for the country to be on par with our visitors, Mr Levi said the country has to come up with ways to increase accessibility and decrease costs.
He said as the lead government agency, the Department of Communication and Information wants to see the Industry players including regulator NICTA, Telikom PNG, BeMobile and Digicel come up with a policy and regulatory framework to boost digital economy in the country.
Mr Levi said the APEC TEL Working Group from the 21 APEC member economies have finalized a new five-year plan for maximizing the potential of the internet to unlock the next generation of growth, across the Asia-Pacific economies.
