CSI themed tech expo a success
The room is silent as the detectives start questioning the suspects. The female detective seems eager to frisk the all-male suspects but her partner puts a stop to it. He brings in the first suspect and the interrogation begins. This was the setting for the presentations at Able Computing Tech Expo 2012 hosted at the Holiday Inn in Port Moresby.
CSI 101: Interrogate the suspects
The first suspect to be questioned was Able Computing’s own Alex Abdon who operated from their Mt Hagen branch. Once the questions started flying, Alex spilled the beans on the range of processors that they had in their arsenal. It was quite an impressive collection of Intel range but the emphasis was on the i3 which was a dual core and the i7 which was a quad core. After getting all they could from the first suspect, they proceeded to the next which was Scott Mackenroth from Acer Australia.
Scott was eager to corporate and soon was singing about the range of Acer products they had available. He started off with the notebooks, then working his way to the ultra-books and finally netbooks. He pointed out the amazing advancements in product design including the DustDefender feature that automatically removes dust as part of its maintenance system. He also told the detectives that Acer had powered the Sydney Olympics and “if it’s good enough for the Olympics, then it’s good enough for your office.” However, the detectives were yet unsatisfied and called more suspects.
Their next suspect looked like he was a member of the Chinese Mafia but they later deduced that Sam Wong was a product specialist from Asus Australia. He talked about their company’s brief history and the fact that they went into producing motherboards in 1998 and have established themselves as world leaders. However, they have branched into other products like graphics cards and many others. He outlined some features that made their products the best like EPU or energy processing unit.
The next guy in the line certainly looked the part. Lee Smith couldn’t help bragging about the new features in the newer models of Toshiba‘s EID products. He went on about Universal Product Driver (UDP), Raster Image Processor (RIP) which supported 19 file formats and their low energy fuser. The female detective asked if they had fixed the problem with toner spills and Lee replied that they had come up with an ingenious way to reuse waste toner.
The last two suspects both came from Able Computing. Ryan Lam was called to present on Windows 8. He took the audience and detectives through a basic rundown of Microsoft’s latest Operating System (OS) including the Metro styled start screen. Then it was up to Maricel Padua to convince the detectives to tryout their custom designed products the BioPlus and Able Payroll. She concluded the presentations with an impressive list of added features in the payroll software that included automatic deductions, and support for banking with the major commercial banks in Papua New Guinea (PNG).
CSI 102: Find hard evidence
The next part of the expo included the audience answering questions about certain products that were presented. However, they had to go and actually read the specifications and details from brochures, pamphlets and posters to get the information.
The presenters had arranged their products on the other side of Holiday Inn’s conference room and participants rushed about trying to find the answers to the questions. It was a fun and informative occasion.
The cleverly designed expo had participant scurrying to read and gather information to fill in a simple multiple choice Q & A sheet. The completed sheets was then placed in a large box and a luck winner was drawn and as it turned out the tablet prize was won by Mr. Nester, an instructor from the Don Bosco Technological Institute (DBTI).
There were also other prizes that were given away by Able Computing to a few lucky audience.
Summary
The theme and design of the expo was brilliant as it encouraged the audience to actively seek information about the products on offer. The staff were also very helpful and friendly. However, the only problem was the timing. The original program had indicated 9:30am for the presentations to begin but due to unexplained circumstances the program started after 10am.
Overall, the presentations proved interesting and I look forward to their next expo.
