Pakistani mobile operators use biometric verification for SIM cards
In an effort to help Pakistani law enforcement agencies do their jobs effectively, mobile phone carriers in the country are now using the Biometric Verification System (BVS) to register SIM users, according to DAWN.com. However, there is a time frame of 90 days.
Telenor CEO Michael Patrick Foley said the time frame was too short. However, the recent school massacre in Penshawar has iterated the need for such an exercise.
The need to verify and register SIM card users have become a necessity after mobile phones have been used by perpetrators of crime and terrorists.
In 2013, authorities in Papua New Guinea (PNG) also announced an exercise to get SIM users verified in 2014. However, due to legislative issues, it has been deferred indefinitely until all the legal framework is sorted out.
