PNG Censorship Office to Install Internet Filter to Block Pornography
The Censorship Office of Papua New Guinea will be installing an internet filter to block pornography and other illicit materials that are currently accessible in the country.
According to the Post Courier, the office had budgeted K4 million for a system which will fall under the Classifications of Films, Publication & Online Services Bill developed last year. The system will be targeted at protecting children from accessing adult material online. However, a specific filter has not yet been identified.
Chief Censor Steven Mala said there was no preferred filter but the office would be doing a feasibility study to choose a suitable system for the country. He also said other landing agencies would be involved.
Mr Mala also they are only trying to filter illicit and harmful content and not to ‘control the medium of communication’
While the feasibility study is being conducted, an awareness campaign will be carried out by agents throughout the country.
