Google looses landmark legal battle
Gold Coast entrepreneur and self-help guru Jamie McIntyre
Internet giant Google has lost a legal battle in the Australian courts that may open the floodgates to online litigation against anonymous online commentators.
A report on news.com.au states that the Supreme Court of Australia has ordered Google Australia to release details of those behind a website defaming Gold Coast entrepreneur and self-help guru Jamie McIntyre. The site reportedly labelled him a “thieving scumbag”.
According to Barrister John Bryson, the win is a first time any legal action against the mega search engine company has been successful in the country. He also said, “People need to know that they can take on the big companies, the major players, and get a win.”
The private investigator hired by McIntyre, Travis Burch said it was “…a good day for people who don’t frankly want to be defamed on the internet.” He was hired to track down the creators of the website so that McIntyre could sue for defamation.
McIntyre’s attempts to find the authors of the website have not been successful yet.
