Manning commends Education dept initiative to introduce subject to address gender violence
Commissioner of Police and Controller of the National Pandemic Response Mr David Manning has commended the Education Department for making compulsory a new core subject called the Citizenship and Christian Values Curriculum aimed to counter increasing law and order problems and gender based violence in Papua New Guinea.
Mr Manning in welcoming the initiative said:
We acknowledge the COVID-19 pandemic has had a widespread impact on many aspects of society including gender violence and while police will do what it must do to arrest perpetrators, it is the duty and responsibility of all citizens and institutions to fight against gender based violence and all forms of violence.
I commend the Education Department for its introduction of the Citizenship and Christian Values curriculum into schools as it will go a very long way in addressing this chronic situation, to bring order into the country and make our mothers,sisters and daughters safe again.

Education Secretary Dr Uke Kombra announced this on the COVID-19 Question & Answer recording during the Education and Governors summit which began in Port Moresby on Monday. The program is expected to air this Sunday evening on NBC TV, TV WAN, EMTV and radio stations.
Dr Kombra in answering questions from the COVID-19 hosts on what the Education Department is doing to address growing concerns especially on gender violence said the department acknowledges this concern and in its effort to combat this has made it a core compulsory subject similar to Mathematics, Science and English.
He also informed Governors that the Citizenship and Christian Values curriculum is already being implemented in Prep to Grade 6 and from 2021 it will be implemented from Grade 7 to 12 as a core subject.
This is to indoctrinate and instill Christian and citizenship values in our young people.Our challenge is having trained teachers, specialized teachers and an option is to bring in pastors, train them to be teachers and use them effectively.
