Provincial Administrators in POM for COVID-19 briefing with Controller
Provincial Administrators are in Port Moresby for a briefing on the COVID 19 State of Emergency Operations this week with Controller and Commissioner of Police David Manning.
Mr Manning said the briefing session is to update the Provincial Administrators on the progress of the SOE and discussions on how provinces are responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. This will make a big part of the SOE Report to Parliament which sits in two weeks time to determine the future of the SOE.
Mr Manning said the provinces are the key to stopping any spread throughout the country and therefore the provincial bureaucracy must be upfront in the planning post SOE if Parliament does end the SOE in June.
I recently delegated powers vested in the Controller to the Administrators. The virus is spread through movement of human beings and as we slowly open up the provincial borders the provincial authorities must be empowered to act immediately when there is a detection and my meeting with them will be stress the need to be ready.
National departments and agencies will work closely with them and hopefully this also will be the way forward to look at our networking and systems as we begin to operate in a new norm.
– Mr Manning
He said the Prime Minister also announced today the National Government’s intentions to work closely with the provincial governments from lessons learnt from the COVID-19 pandemic to build up health services in the province and districts.
Mr Manning said respective provinces through their administrators will discuss how provinces are managing COVID-19 in the COVID-19 Question and Answer show which is aired through NBC TV, EMTV, TVWAN and the NBC provincial radio stations as well as FM100, Radio Light and Lalokau FM.
