NCD Governor wants National Service introduced
NATIONAL Capital District (NCD) Governor Powes Parkop has called on the Government to establish the National Service to have civilians trained by military to be good citizens.
He is willing to try that in Port Moresby using provincial and district improvement funds and military personnel if the Government does not buy it.
Speaking at the 20-Day Human Rights Activism in Port Moresby on Monday, Parkop said the programme was highly necessary for the country as a pathway to address social problems, including law and order issues the country was facing.
Having ordinary citizens to be trained by military for some period of time on various life-building programmes, including basic life skills and behavioural change, would greatly benefit our society and take it to another stage as people would be rehabilitated and educated to live responsibly in societies so that social issues can be minimised
The programme was successfully practised in many countries around world in conscriptions of youths for military and other training.
It was a way to unite youths and motivate them, build strong self-esteem, discipline, dignity, believers, entrepreneurial spirit, patriotism feelings and love for the country and people.

He said the young population would be motivated to do something better for their country out of love which would contribute to developments and societal peace and orders.
He said countries that recently practised the National Service programmes included Malaysia (2018), Brunei,(2014) and Germany in 1956 and 2011 and they saw the benefits
