GE Healthcare Vscan Trialed in Enga
General Electronics (GE) Healthcare Vscan; a handheld ultrasound system is currently being trialed in Enga, Loop PNG reports, an initiative of the Tribal Foundation.
The device, a pocket sized ultrasound device, will enable medical professionals in remote and rural areas the ability to perform scans and easily image at the point of care. According to the Vscan portfolio will transform “the physical examination and determine optimized course of action for patients” and allowing remote consultation with specialists in major hospitals.
It comes in the standard Vscan and with Dual Probe. It is unclear which version is being trialled in Enga. However, medGadget says Vscan with Dual Probe expands the capabilities of the original product.
“This opens up the capabilities of the device to image the carotid arteries and jugular veins, hip and knee joints, as well as extended imaging of the thorax.”
Tribal Foundation and GE Healthcare have teamed up with the Enga provincial health authority in this pilot project which will be rolled out to seven health facilities.
Specialist volunteers Dr Nancy Kerr and Dr Mark Hauswald from Telluride, Colorado, were brought in the set up the project and provide training for staff on the ground. They have also visited 3 of the 7 identified health facilities.
Enga governor, Peter Ipatas, was happy with the project and said it would support and enhance the efforts of the provincial health authority. He said:
“We are delighted to be the first to pilot the Vscan in PNG and will do our best to develop a model for other provinces to start their own Vscan programs.”
