Telikom PNG introduces the Huawei EC5321 3G MiFi
Telikom PNG has just introduced a new product, the Huawei 3G MiFi, which they have described as “ideal for the home, office, conference, café or school.”
The MiFi is stands for Mobile Wi-Fi and was first introduced in the country by rival telco, Digicel PNG, and was locked to their network. Other vendors also sold open devices which were a bit more expensive.
I tried calling Telikom PNG Customer Care this morning to get more details including the model number of the device. However, I was given contact details and alluded to the retails shops at Vision City (310 0040) who advised that the device is a Huawei EC5321 MiFi which has a 3.1 Mbps download and 1.8 Mbps upload speeds. It broadcasts standards Wi-Fi 802.11 B/G/N and can connect up to 8 devices.
Although I am excited by this new product, the price alone is a setback. Telikom PNG is introducing this product for K349 (with free 1000MB) which is locked to their network. The same amount can buy me an unlocked version on Amazon or eBay.
The other thing that bothers me is the way Telikom PNG clients credit their data accounts. I’m a user of the telco’s previous EVDO dongle and it is really a hassle to update my data account. However, I’m hoping that with this new device, they can also envision easier ways to update accounts.
Anyway, the promotion launch offer ends on June 30, 2014, and I expect the price to rise (or drop) depending on demand. However, if you are really keen on trying this technology then head over to your nearest Telikom PNG retail shop.
Below is a Russian ad for the Huawei EC5321. I know the language is a barrier but I’m sure you will get the message.
