Minister assures cheaper mobile rates
The Minister for State Enterprises, Ben Micah, has boldly assured parliament that there will be cheaper mobile rates once Vodafone-BeMobile commences operations.
The minister made this in response to Kiriwina-Goodenough MP Wesley Gordon’s query on the lack of communication infrastructure and network coverage in the country.
He said the government had come to aide a “sick BeMobile” by engaging Vodafone Fiji. He also said Vodafone’s entry and alternative products would bring down mobile rates that current red giant, Digicel, enjoys.
Micah said it would create tension in the market and drive mobile rates down.
Meanwhile, former Prime Minister, grand chief Sir Michael Somare has taken a swipe at the government’s deal to assist the “sick BeMobile.” He said the government should focus more on promoting local investment in the telecommunications business rather than engage overseas companies.
He added that organizations like Digicel had manipulated the market through its monopoly in network coverage leaving BeMobile struggling.
According to Ben Micah, the government’s solution to this telecommunication issue is the engagement of Vodafone-BeMobile to provide competition.
