5 Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Tips for the Novice
What is Search Engine Optimization?
Do you know what search engine optimization is? Have you ever had a website, blog, post, hub or lens that no has visited? You’ve put so much effort and thought into the process yet you find that no one can find it.
The problem, most likely, is that your website or blog or post or hub cannot be easily found by search engines like Google, Bing and others etc. if it doesn’t appear on the first page of Google’s search result then chances are people will not visit it. In order to make your website more visible to search engines you need to consider search engine optimization when writing.
Search Engine Optimization or SEO for short sounds very complicated and the novice can be overwhelmed with the thought that it is impossible to achieve. However, rest assured, it is very easy. All it is proper placing of key words or phrases within your posts and Google will do the rest.
In this post, I will be giving you 5 search engine optimization tips that you can use to improve your page ranking.
Tip # 1: Key phrase, key phrase, key phrase
The first thing you need to consider when writing a post is to identify a widely searched keyword or phrase. I recommend finding a phrase rather than a word as it narrows the search toward a specific subject or topic and makes your post more visible.
You must also use this phrase at least three (3) times on the post and in headers and the title. You will notice, if you’ve been reading my post carefully, that the keyword or phrase I’m using is “search engine optimization”, and I’ve managed to fit in more than three times already in the post. However, the keyword or phrase is only part of the work.
Tip # 2: Content is king
While strategically placing keywords and phrases in the right places in the post is essential, you must always remember that the quality of the content raises the chances of a better page rank.
It is a common rule to write clearly and concisely, edit properly and make sure that your content presents something of value to the readers. The whole idea is to present something to them so that they will come back.
I would also recommend writing posts with more than 500 words. Posts that are too short are often not that informative which is not good for reader retention.
Tip # 3: Include pictures
Many readers like graphics in the posts. However, the graphics has to be related to the topic and you have got to include the keywords in the caption or alt text. Also naming the graphics to include your keyword does not hurt either.
However, you have to be careful not to use copyrighted images without proper authorization. Fortunately, there are many free images on the internet you can use. A search on your favorite search engine should come up with fruitful results.
Tip # 4: Meta data /tags
An important part of search engine optimization (SEO) is adding the relevant meta tags or data to your post or website. This is basically a HTML code that tell search engine robots what the website or post is about. It makes your content more visible to search engines. Fortunately, for CMS like Drupal, WordPress and Joomla, you can use plugins that make this easy – without any HTML coding.
The important factor here is to make sure your keyword or phrase is included in the meta description.
Tip # 5: Never give up
The final tip is not an SEO tip but more of an encouragement to bloggers and website owners. You will find that traffic to your site will not pick up overnight. Instead, you will have to continuously work at it to be successful. However, search engine optimization (SEO) is considered an art as well as a technical skill. What works for others may not work for you so the best thing you can do is experiment until you find that magic mix.
