PNGCS 2nd Quater Seminar Report 2012
The Papua New Guinea Computer Societies’ 2nd Quarter Seminar at Gateway Hotel yesterday afternoon presented some informative and interesting topics. The seminar was sponsored by Daltron who were given the opportunity to present first.
Daltron’s Communications Systems Manager, Mr. Warwick Vele, took the podium and presented on very small aperture terminal (VSAT) technologies; basically a two way satellite antenna smaller than 3 meter in diameter that is used for both data and voice communications. He basically outlined the advantages of the technology especially its fast and easy to install feature.
This was followed by Daltron’s Presales Manager Albert Kasokason’s presentation on Technology Trends in Business.
Kasokason basically stated that technology has basically given a rebirth to a new business trend that focuses on social rather than formal sales. He outlined how business and corporations are now using social media like Facebook, Twitter and MySpace to communicate and sell to their clients.
He also pointed out that technology also changed the dimension of work hours from regular 9 – 5 to 24 /7 especially with the use of mobile devices. The next and the most interesting to me came from Mr. Vijesh from the Institute of Business Studies (IBS).
Vijesh presented on Preventing Selective Jamming Attacks in a Network with a basic rundown of the types of attacks and preventions strategies. He highlighted the need for secure data transmission gave two examples of cryptography that could be used to prevent attacks. They were:
- The Puzzling Technique; basically a cryptographic puzzle that would confuse a hacker and give time for data to be transmitted safely to the recipient.
- Mapping Transformation Protocol; this encryption uses a key algorithm.
The last presentation came from Daltron’s Professional Services Manager Andrew Robertson and was on Project Management. Robertson basically gave an outline of the project management methods used by Daltron, Microsoft Sure Step Approach, and what it covered.
His presentation was the most thorough as he highlighted every aspect in the stages of this management approach. He also introduced the website ProjectManagement.com which Daltron uses to keep track of their projects and allow clients to view the progress.
The seminar was educational and informative. The sponsors also took the time to showcase some of their technologies on offer primarily the VSAT technology and HP Blade servers.
The next seminar will be held in September while the final annual seminar in November.
