Microsoft acquires UK artificial intelligence firm
Microsoft has reportedly acquired UK-based artificial intelligence (AI) firm SwiftKey for roughly K740 million.
According to the UK firm’s blog, founders Jon Reynolds and Ben Medlock said they believed joining Microsoft was the right step in their journey to enhance interaction between people and technology. Meanwhile, they have also assured users that their focus will not change.
Our number one focus has always been to build the best possible products for our users. This will not change. Our apps will continue to be available on Android and iOS, for free. We are as committed as ever to improving them in new and innovative ways.
Microsoft’s Executive VP for Technology and Research, Harry Shum, meanwhile, stated on their blog that the move is in response to their ambition to reinvent productivity by leveraging the intelligent cloud technology.
SwiftKey’s predictive technology aligns with Microsoft’s investments and ambition to develop intelligent systems that can work more on the user’s behalf and under their control.
SwiftKey’s flagship SwiftKey Keyboard is used and loved by both Android and iOS users. An intelligent software keyboard, it learns from a user’s keystroke and predicts and corrects typos, increasing productivity.
