Condor, the most exciting thing on television at the moment
AT & T’s Condor is probably the most exciting thing on television at the moment and unlike others that have captivated audiences with the charm of fantasy, magic or science fiction, it is a thriller that has been adapted directly from the silver screen.
The series stars Max Irons as Joe Turner, a CIA analyst who uncovers a deadly conspiracy within the agency and becomes a target for assassination. It is based on the film and screenplay for 1975’s Three Days of Condor which stars the legendary Robert Redford and the novel Six Days of Condor by James Grady.
Although it is still early in the season, the series has garnered good reviews thanks to atmosphere it brings to the small screen and the fresh face of British actor Irons sets a tone that is new. There are also riveting performances by William Hurt as Uncle Bob, Mira Sorvino as hateful (and possibly sex starved) Marty and the luscious Leem Lubany as the hot, bad-ass assassin Gabrielle Joubert contracted to create a ‘cold body’ of Joe.
Of course, Condor is meant for an adult audience and has strong language and some gracious scenes of Irons’ naked bottom in the first episode. However, it explores a topic that (I believe) has not been done on television yet – the government’s infringement on citizen’s rights and trust.
Well, actually there have been a few series that were built on that premise including 24, Quantico and few others, but none seem to be as captivating as this one. And rightfully it should, especially being adapted from a classic film like Three Days of Condor.
The film adaptation came out not long after the Watergate scandal and hit a nerve with the American public. Fortunately, the series has been upgraded to a modern setting with surveillance technology taking a major upgrade, and the enemy being ‘terrorists’. However, with so many conspiracy theories about the 9/11 attacks, the series may just stir up a different cord with the public.
Now, I can’t compare the series to the film because I haven’t seen it. I was not even born when it was released, but I’m hoping that the television series does not try to imitate it but evolves into a fresher take on the story.
The first season is turning to be like a mini movie with each episode building to climactic ending, but will it follow the storyline set by the film or the novel? That is something to lookout for. However, let’s hope that it can go beyond the first season especially with so many shows being canceled recently.
(Yes, I am referring to ABC’s Deception.)
Anyway, only 4 episodes have come out so far but we can look forward to a few more exciting ones to come. And if you haven’t seen the first episode yet then I suggest doing it now and share your thoughts when you are done.
