Using Windows Live Mail as an Exchange client
Most organizations (that I know of) us Exchange as their mail server. However, only a few email client programs are able to connect to exchange. This includes Outlook and the free options Thunderbird, Zimbra Desktop and, as I recently found out – Windows Live Mail.
Here is how to configure your Windows Live Mail as the email client for your exchange. Please take note that this has been only tested in a local network environment and was done on a 64bit Windows 7 Toshiba L755 notebook with Windows Live Mail 2011 which was bought at Radio Shack in Honolulu.
Open Windows Live Mail from the start menu. When the program is open click on the Accounts tab and then click on button with the green plus (+) sign. This will open the wizard to add a new account.
In the wizard, enter your exchange email address in the “Email address” box, enter your password and a name you want to be displayed. This can be anything. However, I prefer to put Exchange so that I can easily differentiate between the other email accounts I have on Windows Live Mail. Also make sure to check (tick) the “Manually configure the server settings” box and click next.
The next thing will be to configure your connection to the mail server. If you don’t have this information then you can either ask for it from your IT department or have then come and configure the settings. I think the latter is a better options.
The configurations are basically divided into two sections, incoming and outgoing. Select IMAP from the server type menu. Then in the server address type the server IP. Your logon username should appear by default but if it doesn’t then type it in. In the outgoing server address, type your server IP and then click next – and you are all set.
Another screen will appear confirming that you have added an email account to Windows Live Mail. Just click on Finish and the program will start connecting to your server and will start downloading your email.
Now by default, the folder you created will not show. You can enable them by clicking IMAP Folders in the Accounts tab and then double clicking on each folder
