Tablets going to new heights in Australian aviation
The major Australian airlines are literally planning to take tablets to new heights. Qantas Boeing 747 flights will have an Apple iPad 2 in every seat pocket with wireless streaming of entertainment. The tablets will be locked down to bypass Apple’s boot screen and go straight to QStreaming; Qantas’ wireless inflight entertainment streaming app. However, they are not the only ones jumping on the tablet wave.
Virgin Australia is ahead, also rolling out tablets on its domestic flights and to New Zealand in August. However, they have chosen Apple’s arch nemesis Samsung and have gone with the Android powered Galaxy Tab 10.1 devices. The Australian Business Traveler reported CEO John Borghetti said is “a better product than Apple.”
Unfortunately, the device is not available for all the passengers with business class given first priority. The content is also preloaded but Virgin is be moving to Wi-Fi streaming later in the year.
The competing airlines’ move to introduce wireless entertainment in the form of tablets is taking the fight between Apple and Samsung to new heights and has had a number of causalities already especially the Apple’s Map app which has coped criticism from all angles – but that’s beside the point.
The big question is will our local airlines especially the flag carrier Air Niugini (ANG) follow this new trend? And if it does, which way will it go?
I wouldn’t be surprised if ANG jumped on the bandwagon and tried to do something similar on its international flights. It would be ideal if this concept was adapted for domestic flights. I mean we pay more for domestic travel than going down to Cairns. However, seeing the service they provide, I wouldn’t be surprised.
So the next time (if you are an Aussie) you get on a Qantas Boeing 747 then don’t be surprised to find an Apple iPad in your seat.
