Microsoft Windows Server 2012 Finally Unveiled
Microsoft has finally unveiled its latest server product, Windows Server 2012, the first for a cloud based operating system (OS).
The new system will include Hyper-V, Microsoft’s virtualization software, as a feature and will be able to support 64 virtual servers with memory up to as much as 1TB.
This is the software giant’s major step in effectively managing large server clusters. It is also a major release in its server products since 2009. The launch is also a prelude to the release of another OS set to change desktop computing, Windows 8, which is to be made public in October and available for existing Windows users to upgrade for $39.99.
According to, Ryan Leuterio Gaduang, a Microsoft Certified Trainer (MCT) from the Philippines who was recently engaged by Daltron, the two products are corresponding packages.
He said the Windows 8 is the desktop OS for Windows Server 2012 and they feature Microsoft’s new look.
The only difference, he said, were the server features and the color of the start screen. He said Windows 8 spotted a more colorful look while its server companion had a monotone look.
Both products share the Windows NT 6.2 kernel and the Metro interface, and share the cloud focus that Windows 8 has. Most of the basic applications and file services will be directed to the internet with minimal applications running locally.
According to The Hindu 63% of the system will be in the clouds. The editions of Windows Server 2012 have also been dramatically reduced from the previous 6 to 2.
Windows Server 2012 will come in two editions as opposed to its predecessor Windows Server 2008 which was released in six different versions. The two versions are Standard and Datacenter.
Standard will be used for running your basic services like Exchange, file sharing, SharePoint etc, and Datacenter will be focused on running virtual machines. This basically means the later would pack a mean hardware punch.
The release of these operating systems is also accompanied by Microsoft’s latest Office suite, MS Office 2012.
Windows Server 2012 is available for download and evaluation at Microsoft’s TechNet Evaluation Center.
