WHO classifies mobile phones as possible carcinogenic
The World Health Organization (WHO) recently announced that they have classified mobile phones as a possible carcinogenic. This means that there is a chance that mobile radiation can cause brain cancer. This puts the world’s most used device in the same category as coffee, asbestos and tobacco.
Researchers have suggested a link between mobile radiation and cancer but with the introduction of broader mobile network architectures like the 3G and 4G, these chances may increase.
This is because 3G uses more power and thus emits more radiation. The radiation released by mobile phones is microwaves – the same used in microwave ovens but on a smaller scale.
Best practice
Mobile manufacturers and scientists have suggested;
- Keeping the mobiles a certain distance from your head when using it. Mobile manufacturers may have their own prescribed usage and it may vary. However, the consensus is that should not be held too close to the head;
- Using a headset instead;
- Not using mobiles to talk for long periods of time;
- Using text messages (SMS) more, and ;
- Use only areas where there is good signal strength. The phone uses more battery power in areas that have low signals, which in turn radiates more energy.
