Vodafone Fiji to manage BeMobile

By on December 21, 2012

After months of speculation, it has been finally confirmed that Vodafone Fiji will be managing nationally owned mobile communications company, BeMobile (formerly B-Mobile). This was reported in The National (December 18).

According to the report, the government will retain its 51% stake in the company. However, management rights will be transferred to Vodafone after ongoing managerial issues with the current management who have failed to impress the government caucus with satisfactory results. The company is also a direct competitor against Irish mobile company, Digicel; who has transformed the scope of internet and mobile communication since establishing in the country.

As a major rival to Digicel in Fiji, the government believes that Vodafone has the right experience to compete with ‘Papua New Guinea’s bigger and better network.’

While the government will retain its market shares, other stakeholders are offloading their shares to Vodafone. It has been estimated that they might buy up to 40% of market shares.
